The Holiday Weekend

Dec 1st, 08

Good morning folks,

The Chicago streets are covered with snow today, and I'm back home after a weekend filled with music and meeting new people.

I reached what I thought might be the pinnacle of my career thus far on Friday at just after 9 am. Pinnacle, you ask? What did he do on Friday morning? Shortly after the sun had risen over the great city of Milwaukee, I sat in a television studio and recorded what I consider one of the greatest holiday songs recorded in the last decade: Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You." Yes, I actually sang this song for a TV station. When most people think of timeless holiday songs, "Let It Snow", "Jingle Bells" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" are the first melodies that come to mind. Not me.

While playing this Christmas classic seemed like such a high point, the shows at Turner Hall and the O'Shaugnessy in St. Paul trumped this television appearance. It's always good to hang with Shelby Lynne and her band on the road.

The setlist from Saturday night:

Nickels and Dimes (new tune)
One for the Road
Factory Town Lullabies
Ain't No Hurry
Annabelle
Go Easy

My drive home yesterday was a bit longer than it should have been due to holiday traffic, salt trucks and plenty of snow, but I didn't mind. When you drive 30 miles an hour on the interstate in northern Wisconsin, it offers a better chance to check out the local happenings. Two roadside signs stick out to me:

"Hunt Pheasants - No License Required!"

"Naughty Novelties & Bakery"

Both of these seem like incredible opportunities, but the latter was especially amusing. Adult toys and cookies under the same roof - now that's a business. Unfortunately, I had no time to stop for any sightseeing. Maybe next time.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgivings. I'll be in hibernation in the Windy City snow for a few to work on some new tunes, and I'll look forward to sharing plenty of them very soon.

Cheers,
David
